Slim Jan Quiz is a South African daily quiz. This page explains what personal information we hold, why we hold it, and how to get it back or removed. We process personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
What we collect
- Your name, and an optional honorific, shown on the leaderboard.
- Your email address, used to sign you in, reset your password, and send quiz reminders.
- Your password, stored only as a one-way hash. We cannot read it.
- Your province and city, used for the town and province leaderboards.
- An optional favourite South African fact, shown on your public profile if you write one.
- An optional profile picture, if you upload one.
- Your quiz results: which answers you gave, your score, and the date, for scoring, streaks and leaderboards.
- A push notification subscription, only if you turn notifications on.
Why we collect it
To run the quiz: to sign you in, score your answers, keep your streak, place you on the leaderboards you asked to be on, and remind you to play. We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Who else sees it
- Railway hosts the app and database.
- Resend sends our emails, so it processes your email address.
- Other players see your name, honorific, town, province, profile picture, badges, scores and streaks on the leaderboards and on your public profile. Your email address is never shown to other players.
How long we keep it
For as long as your account exists. Ask us to delete it and we remove your account and your quiz history. Leaderboard entries that already named you are removed with it.
Your rights
Under POPIA you may ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, object to how we use it, and withdraw consent for emails at any time. Email us and we will action it. You may also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.
